Coppicing and woodland management
The woodland group meets on Fridays and is most active between September and April. In 2011, the Nonsuch Park Joint Management Committee approved a proposal for selected areas of the Park's woodlands to be coppiced and actively managed. A woodland management plan was drawn up and approved by the Forestry Commission. The Voles work closely with the resident coppice-worker to support the plan by thinning and coppicing areas of woodland that had become dark and overgrown. We have also donated and planted hundreds of new tree saplings. We have seen a marked increase in the number of wild flowers, butterflies and birds in the woods as more sunlight is let in.
As much of the wood as possible is used by the Voles and the Park's wood yard (run by Future Woodlands) to make products such as benches, tables, hand-carved spoons, stools, firewood and kindling. Find out more about the Voles' wood craft activities on our Wood Crafts page.
